Community Service
Butch Kronlund and his wife of 28 years, Patte Kronlund, strongly believe in collaborative efforts to enhance their lives and those who live in the Big Sur Community. To that end, Butch and Patte volunteer their time and expertise to achieve measurable goals, and to “Give Back” as a sincere form of gratitude for the privilege of living and working In one of the worlds most dynamic regions.
Big Sur Health Center
Both have served on the Board of Directors of the Big Sur Health Center
(Patte is currently president) and with the involvement of a wide cross-section of community members,
were successful in raising money, designing, permitting, and
installing a new state of the art medical facility in the heart of Big Sur. The crews
from Big Sur Builders performed their tasks pro bono and the new facility is thriving,
and providing quality comprehensive health care to all in Big Sur, regardless of ability to pay.
Coastlands Mutual Water Company
Butch is currently president of Coastlands Mutual Water Company, an entity responsible for treating and delivering clean water to the 32 property owners of the coastlands enclave between Post Ranch and Nepenthe Restaurant. During his tenure, huge strides have been made to increase water storage, improve the conveyance infrastructure and to tackle the ever more stringent requirements of Monterey County and the EPA in terms of water quality.
Big Sur River Run
“The Run” is an annual fundraising event held at Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park to benefit the Big Sur Volunteer Fire Brigade and the Big Sur Health Center. Patte has served as administrator of the 1000-runner race and Butch involves himself in logistics in the days leading up to the event and on race day. Since it’s inception, the Big Sur River Run has raised more than $600,000 in cash to help support these two critical not-for-profit organizations.
Recycling Center
Butch is currently working with a dedicated team of Big Sur community leaders, Spearheaded by Ray Sanborn, to bring recycling bins back to Big Sur. All involved are passionate in their pursuit of finding an appropriate site and funding for construction.
Coast Property Owners Association
Butch has been recently voted onto the board of directors of C.P.O.A.
His areas of interest are the Work Force Housing Initiative and the routing of the Big Sur
section of the California Coastal Trail. This group of highly competent and hard working
stakeholders is the only organization in place speaking out against further
acquisition of private property by public agencies. Entirely volunteer, C.P.O.A
embodies the self-reliant spirit of the original settlers of Big Sur coupled with
mastery of the skill sets required to succeed in the 21st century.
